WHEN TO USE THIS
- Send a PDF without the email attachment limit. Most inboxes cap attachments around 20-25MB. A PDF to URL link has no such ceiling, so contracts, portfolios, and scanned documents go through every time.
- Drop it straight into chat, Slack, or a CRM. A link pastes cleanly into a message thread, a support ticket, or a CRM note. No attaching and re-attaching the same file across five tools.
- Share a read-only copy without granting Drive access. Sending someone a Google Drive link often means managing sharing permissions. A PDF to URL link just opens, no login and no permission request on their end.
- Stop the 'request access' back-and-forth. A Drive link sent to the wrong Google account triggers an access request you have to approve. A direct link skips that entirely, whoever has the link can open it.
- Send the same PDF to many people without re-attaching it. Share one link in a newsletter, onboarding doc, or group chat instead of emailing the same 20MB file to thirty inboxes.
WHEN NOT TO USE THIS
If the PDF holds anything confidential, payroll, medical, legal, financial, don't use a public link. Anyone who has the URL can open it. For sensitive documents, use encrypted email or a password-protected file instead.
What a PDF URL is
A PDF URL is a web address that points straight at a PDF file. Open it and most browsers show the document in their built-in viewer, so people can read it without downloading anything first. They can still save a copy if they want one.

Why send a link instead of an attachment
Most email services cap attachments at around 20 to 25MB, and a scanned contract or a design portfolio can go past that quickly. A link has no such limit, so the document arrives every time.
A link is also easier to reuse. Put the same URL in a newsletter, a chat channel or a CRM note and everyone gets the same file, instead of thirty inboxes each holding their own copy.
One thing to know: a link is a snapshot. If you fix a typo in the PDF later, upload the new version and share the new link.
PDF link or Google Drive?
A Drive or Dropbox link often comes with sharing settings, a login prompt, or a request access screen if it reaches the wrong account. A filetourl.org link just opens. There is nothing for the recipient to sign in to and nothing for you to approve.
The trade-off is control. Anyone who has the link can open it, and you cannot limit it to named people. If you need per-person access, a shared drive is the better tool.
Where to use your PDF link
