WHEN TO USE THIS
- Send a document to someone without Word installed. A link opens in the browser on any device, no software needed on their end.
- Get past an email attachment block. Some company inboxes strip or block .doc/.docx attachments as a security policy. A link sidesteps that entirely since it's just text in the email body.
- Share a finished draft without inviting edits. Google Docs and Word Online both make it easy to accidentally grant edit access. A file link is inherently read-only, there's no permissions dialog to get wrong.
- Attach a CV, cover letter, or proposal to a job application or client email. Recruiters and clients often prefer a link over an attachment their spam filter might flag.
WHEN NOT TO USE THIS
If the document needs to stay editable and collaborative (a shared team doc, a contract still being negotiated), use Google Docs or Word Online instead. A file link is a snapshot, not a live document, changes you make afterward won't update the link.
